In April 2017, with the Lakeview Trail nearing the end of construction, Long Lake Provincial Park played host to the first ever Long Lake Park Family Fun Run. This year, the run is back! Last year’s edition of the race was a 4-kilometre timed fun run on the Lakeview Trail. This year’s race, named the Long Lake Park Family Fun Run 2018, will build on 2017’s success and bring several new things to an event already brimming with fun, the outdoors, a little friendly competition and a lot of snacks.
On a clear late April morning in 2017, 225+ participants gathered at the trailhead of the Lakeview Trail directly opposite the entrance to Long Lake Village. A relaxed, jovial atmosphere spread through the crowd in the minutes prior to the beginning of this first ever fun run held on the Lakeview Trail. Following a 4-kilometre run though the picturesque trail, a post race event with snacks and refreshments was held just across the street in the parkette on Hadley Crescent (photo 1). Post-run gatherings lasted well into the mild April afternoon. As the sound system and snack tent were being loaded onto the trucks, and the last families playing together on the playground began to head out and move on with their Saturday afternoon, a decision was made that this would not be that last run to be held in the park.

Flash forward to March 2018 and planning for the latest edition of the Long Lake Park Run is well underway. This year, all the highlights from the inaugural run are making a return. The run is hosted in partnership with Run Nova Scotia and once again, Long Lake Provincial Park will serve as the backdrop for the run. Like 2017, there will be a post race reception just up the street on Hadley Crescent (photo 2). post-run events will take place in the parkette in the centre of the street. The park and playground look much the same as they did last year, however, the streetscape itself will look quite different. Since the inaugural edition of the race, eight homes have been completed on Hadley Crescent and several more are currently under construction. This portion of the neighborhood really is starting to look complete! Like last year, snacks and beverages including bananas, granola bars, apples, water and coffee will be available for all after the race.

While the race will be similar to its predecessor, several new and exciting changes are coming to this year’s edition of the event. The 2017 Fun Run featured a 4-kilometre course. this year, the route has been bumped up to a more standard 5k distance. Last time around, some sections of the Lakeview Trail were still under construction. Those sections have long since been completed. This means that there will be more things to see and more corners of the park to explore along the race route. During the race, participants can expect to run through the forest, on bridges, over streams, along the shore of Long Lake, and loop around Withrod Lake. All this ground will be covered on the accessible gravel surface of the Lakeview Trail (photo 3).
